An Essential Guide For Deep Cleaning All Types Of Furniture
By: Emaids Dev

A new year just started, and many of us are expecting a brighter future. Whether you made new year resolutions about becoming a better person or being happier, one of the essential things to consider is cleaning your home. By deep cleaning your home, you are giving new life to your surroundings and lifting your mood at the same time.

But, where to begin? We recommend cleaning your furniture, especially your fabric couches and upholstery furniture. Keep reading this blog to discover how to deep clean furniture correctly and start the year with a spotless view.

  1. Remove dust and crumbs

Whether you are cleaning a fabric sofa, a wooden table, or an item of upholstery furniture, first, you need to remove the debris from the surface. Use the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner and get rid of those annoying crumbs. If possible, detach the cushions and vacuum both sides, not forgetting to clean all crevices where dirt accumulates. Sometimes, a lint roller is better to remove pet hair, so be sure to keep one at hand.

  2. Want better results? Use baking soda

Check your kitchen cabinets for some good-old baking soda and use it for your cleaning process. If your furniture has deep-set stains or awful smells, then before vacuuming, sprinkle some baking soda over the surface or make a homemade water-based solution (if your furniture is waterproof). Let the solution absorb the stains and then vacuum with a brush attachment.

  3. Choose the best cleaner for each type of fabric

For almost every kind of furniture, you can use a commercial cleaner, but sometimes it’s better to use homemade solutions using natural ingredients. Depending on the type of fabric your furniture is made of, you can use different formulas to obtain better results.

Synthetic upholstery: in a cup of warm water, mix a half cup of vinegar and half a tablespoon of liquid soap. Put the solution in a spray bottle and mist the stained area. After a couple of minutes, use a soft cloth to scrub until the marks are gone.

Leather upholstery: mix half a cup olive oil with a quarter cup of vinegar and pour the solution into a spray bottle. Apply the mix on the surface and buff with a clean cloth.

Fabric upholstery: in a cup of warm water, mix a quarter cup of vinegar and half a tablespoon of liquid soap. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and mist it over the soiled area. Lastly, scrub with a soft cloth.

  4. Read the manufacturer’s recommendations

Indeed, your couch will have a little tag. Find it and read the manufacturer’s instructions about how to clean your piece of furniture. Some of the most common codes are:

    S: Dry cleaner detergent only.

X: Vacuum cleaner only. No water.

    W: Water is recommended.

WS: You can use a steam vacuum with a mild detergent or a dry-cleaning method.

  5. Dry appropriately

For couches and other fabric furniture, drying is essential to prevent bad odors and mold. Use a dry towel and, if the weather is appropriate, leave the coach outside, under the sun.

  6. For wood and metal parts

Metal parts under your couch or in other pieces of furniture are important to clean too. Use a mix of water and liquid dish soap and dry after you finish. For wooden parts, wipe them with a damp rag, using a mixture of water and white vinegar.
